A standing wooden cross needs more than a good-looking upright. It needs a base that keeps the piece balanced when someone brushes past the table, a door closes nearby, or the floor is not perfectly level. The right solution depends on whether the cross is a small indoor display, a larger floor piece, or something meant to live outside.
The useful rule is simple: the taller the cross and the higher its weight sits, the more the base needs to resist tipping. That does not mean every cross needs a huge platform. It means the base, joint, and placement should be chosen together. Start there, and the finished piece can feel intentional instead of propped up.
Start by deciding where the cross will stand
A tabletop cross, a floor-standing cross, and an outdoor cross solve different problems. A small piece on a stable console table can use a compact foot. A tall piece near an entryway needs enough depth and low weight to handle everyday movement. An outdoor piece has to handle moisture, wind, and changing ground conditions as well as its own weight.
Before cutting a base, put a strip of painter's tape on the floor or tabletop in the size you think the footprint will need. Step back and look at the proportion. Then gently press the imagined top of the cross forward, backward, and side to side. This is not an engineering test, but it is a fast way to see whether a narrow base is asking too much of a tall form.

Choose a base style that matches the scale
Most standing wooden crosses use one of three base approaches. The simplest is a single wide foot with a centered slot. The second is a pair of interlocking feet that make a cross-shaped footprint. The third is a braced base, which adds a rear support or angled members when a cross is tall enough that a simple foot would look undersized or feel unstable.
A slotted single foot
This is the most direct choice for a smaller indoor cross. Cut a foot from solid wood, then make a centered slot that matches the thickness of the upright. The upright can be glued into place, fastened with a concealed screw from below, or held with a bolt when the cross needs to come apart. The foot should extend farther forward and backward than it does to the sides because most tipping force happens in that direction.
Interlocking cross feet
Two feet can intersect with matching half-lap notches to make an X-shaped footprint. This gives the cross support in all directions while using slim pieces that are easy to store. It works especially well when the upright is also made from stock that can accept a clean slot. Keep the feet the same thickness, mark the centerlines from one reference face, and dry-fit them on a flat surface before connecting them to the cross.
A braced base
For a larger cross, a rear brace can be the quietest way to add real stability. A triangular support behind the upright increases the footprint without turning the front into a large pedestal. It is a good option when the piece will be near a wall, on a porch, or in a spot where the back is less visible. A brace also gives you a stronger path for screws or bolts than relying on a narrow slot alone.

Size the footprint before you cut the joint
There is no universal base measurement because wood species, stock thickness, cross height, finish hardware, and placement all affect stability. A good starting point is to make the base at least as deep as the cross is wide. That gives a compact tabletop cross a practical stance without making it look like it is standing on a cutting board.
Then test the unfinished parts. Place the upright in position, add the crossbar if it is separate, and lightly press near the top in every direction. If the piece lifts at one edge or rocks when you let go, increase the depth, add a second foot, or plan a brace. Do this with the actual wood. A drawing can tell you where the pieces go, but it cannot tell you how a heavy knot, a metal detail, or a thick finish changes the balance.
Keep the base visually related to the cross. A wide foot can echo the thickness of the upright, use the same wood species, or carry the same softened edge. The goal is not to hide the support. It is to make it look like the cross grew from it.
Make a centered slot with a clean, snug fit
For a slotted base, measure the thickness of the upright with the actual board instead of trusting its nominal size. A board sold as one inch thick is usually less than one inch after surfacing. Mark the slot width from the upright itself, then use a square to carry the lines across the top of the foot. Mark a depth that leaves enough wood below the slot to keep the foot strong.
- Cut inside the layout lines and sneak up on the fit.
- Remove waste with the tool you can control safely, such as a router, table saw, handsaw and chisel, or drill and chisel.
- Keep the bottom of the slot flat so the upright does not rock.
- Dry-fit the upright and check it with a square from both faces.
- Test the full cross on the surface where it will be used before glue or finish.
The joint should be snug enough to locate the upright but not so tight that you have to hammer it home. Forcing a cross into a too-small slot can split the base along the grain. If you need a permanent connection, glue plus a hidden screw or dowel can add security. If you want a knockdown base, a bolt through the foot into a threaded insert in the upright is easier to service than a glued joint.

Use weight and bracing where the cross needs it
Stability improves when more mass stays low. A thicker hardwood foot, a deeper rear brace, or a discrete steel plate below the base can all help a cross resist movement. Add weight deliberately rather than hiding a problem under a pile of hardware. A base that is too narrow will still look and feel uneasy, even if it is heavy.
For an indoor floor piece, a brace is often more elegant than an oversized foot. Cut two matching supports that run from the back of the upright toward the base, then fasten them with screws placed from the less visible side. Pre-drill holes near ends and edges so the wood has room to accept the fastener without splitting. If the brace lands on the floor, add felt or a similar non-marring pad after the finish has cured.
A cross that will be handled, moved, or displayed where children or pets may bump it deserves a more conservative support plan. Test the completed but unfinished assembly from the directions where it is most likely to be pushed. If it fails that simple test, change the base before the finish makes revisions harder.
Do not ignore the surface below the cross. Thick carpet, an uneven stone hearth, a weathered porch board, or a table with a rounded edge can all make a stable shop test misleading. Bring the unfinished piece to its intended spot, place a thin pad under it only if that is part of the final display, and test it again. The best support is the one that works where the piece will actually be seen and used.
Plan differently for outdoor crosses
Outdoor exposure changes the job. A portable wooden foot that works inside can trap moisture outdoors, soften the ground below it, or become unstable in wind. The USDA Forest Service Wood Handbook explains that wood responds to moisture and dimensional change, so a lasting exterior design should give water somewhere to go and leave room for seasonal movement.
Use exterior-suitable lumber and fasteners, keep end grain out of standing water, and avoid tight crevices that stay wet after rain. A larger outdoor cross usually needs a site-specific support such as a buried post, a footing, or a substantial anchored base. That is no longer a small craft decision, so take the size, wind exposure, soil, and permanence seriously before installing it.
For a smaller cross on a covered porch, a wide base with non-slip feet may be enough. Inspect it seasonally. Refinish exposed surfaces as needed, tighten hardware before it loosens, and move the piece indoors during severe weather when the design was not made for permanent exposure.

Finish the base after the stability test
Do all of the balancing work before the final finish. Dry-fit the cross, check the joint, confirm that the feet meet the floor, and make any brace adjustments while the wood is still easy to cut and sand. Once the form is working, soften sharp edges that will be handled and remove any pencil marks or glue squeeze-out.
Finish the base in a way that belongs with the cross, but do not coat a joint surface if it still needs glue. Tape or keep bare the faces that will be bonded, then finish the visible surfaces after assembly when the method calls for it. For a removable base, seal the parts separately, let them cure, and test the fit again because a thick finish can make a once-perfect slot too tight.
